One of the most fulfilling parts of mentoring has been helping a mentee from the Philippines secure a role in cybersecurity. This mentee came to me with a lot of raw potential and a strong desire to break into the field.
We worked together closely on both the technical and practical aspects of the job search. First, we honed their technical skills to ensure they were ready to take on any challenge in the field. But it wasn’t just about knowing the tools—it was also about being able to clearly communicate technical knowledge to others. We spent a lot of time preparing for interviews, making sure they were confident in discussing their skills, experience, and how they could add value to a potential employer.
I helped my mentee focus on remote job opportunities. In cybersecurity, many positions can be done remotely, so we tailored the search to find roles that didn’t have geographic constraints. This allowed my mentee to expand their reach and apply for roles with companies that valued their skills, regardless of location.
Another key part of our work together was building their personal brand. I encouraged them to get involved in online cybersecurity communities, pursue certifications, and build a portfolio of work that showcased their abilities. This not only helped with credibility but also boosted their confidence, knowing they had tangible evidence of their capabilities.
The most rewarding moment came when they secured a role. It wasn’t just about getting the job—it was about seeing them grow through the process, overcome obstacles, and come out on the other side stronger. That’s what mentorship is all about. It’s about helping someone see their potential, guiding them through the challenges, and watching them succeed.
