Mentee: Eunice Bass
As a UI/UX and cybersecurity intern for Lateral Connect, I have had the opportunity to take on diverse responsibilities and expand my knowledge in my chosen fields. A typical day for me as a UI/UX Intern begins with designing solutions under the guidance of my mentor. Key tasks include:
- Design Development: Creating design solutions and implementing corrections from previous design attempts.
- Design Submission: Submitting design drafts to my mentor for review, revision, and feedback.
- Design Feedback Meeting: Discussing design feedback and revisions with my mentor during a meeting.
After completing design tasks, I shift my focus to development, utilizing:
- WordPress: Building and customizing websites.
- Elementor*: Implementing designs and creating interactive user experiences.
Balancing UI/UX Skill Development and Cybersecurity Awareness
In today’s fast-paced digital world, staying ahead in your career demands consistent effort and a commitment to learning. As someone passionate about both user interface and user experience (UI/UX) design and cybersecurity, I’ve realized that dedicating just one hour a day to research can make a world of difference. Here’s how I structure my time to grow in these two dynamic fields by doing the following
Improving UI/UX Skills
UI/UX design is an ever-evolving discipline that thrives on creativity, innovation, and understanding user needs. To stay sharp and competitive, I make it a point to spend part of my daily research half an hour exploring new techniques, tools, and trends.
- Exploring Fresh Ideas: Platforms like Figma community, Behance, Dribble and serve as my go-to sources for inspiration. These spaces showcase cutting-edge designs from around the globe, helping me understand what’s trending and what resonates with users.
- Learning and Practicing: I regularly engage with resources like online courses, design blogs, and books to deepen my theoretical knowledge.
- Seeking Feedback: Participating in forums allows me to gain valuable insights from other professionals. This iterative process not only refines my skills but also broadens my perspective.
Staying Updated on Cybersecurity Trends
While UI/UX focuses on enhancing user interaction, cybersecurity ensures the safety and trustworthiness of digital experiences. Recognizing the critical role of cybersecurity, I dedicate a portion of my research time to staying informed about the latest developments in this space.
- Following the News: The Hacker News, and industry blogs provide daily updates on vulnerabilities, attacks, and security innovations.
- Expanding Knowledge: I explore online learning platforms to understand key concepts and sharpen my practical skills.
- Engaging with Experts: Following cybersecurity professionals on social media allows me to stay connected with thought leaders who shape the industry.
Balancing these two fields—UI/UX and cybersecurity—might seem challenging at first, but they are deeply interconnected. A seamless, user-friendly design must also prioritize security to ensure trust and usability. By dedicating an hour each day to research, I’ve been able to steadily grow my expertise in both areas, ensuring I remain informed and capable of tackling new challenges.
This internship has provided me with invaluable hands-on experience, mentorship, and opportunities to grow as a UI/UX professional.
